The department of instrumentation was established in the year of 1996 by restructuring the Instrumentation and Services Unit (ISU) as a full fledged academic department. The ISU itself was created by merging the erstwhile Central Instruments and Services Laboratory (CISL) and the Regional Instrumentation Centre (RIC).
There are broadly five groups in the department in the following broad areas:
- Analytical Instrumentation
- Electronic Instrumentation
- Optical and Laser Instrumentation
- Solar Energy and Thermal Instrumentation
- Vacuum and Thin Film Instrumentation.
We run post graduate teaching programs on M.tech, MSc & PhD research programs in various instrumentation specialization.
Some of the noteworthy contributions are:
- The development and commissioning of “Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors” for structural health monitoring of defense fighter aircraft
- Indigenous development of hydrophobic intra-ocular lenses
- Development of novel threshold & memory switching devices
- Development of Copper-Indium diselenide hetero-junction solar cells
- Novel infrared optical imaging & spectroscope for early detection of cancer
- Development of plasma sources for deposition of various coatings with tailored properties
- Development of micro strip detectors for radiation sensing
- Development of Surface Acoustic wave sensor for various applications
- Optical sensor for detecting the He & O2 liquid levels for GSLV rockets
